“The Sugarmill Woods community has been selected as one of the sites for new club extension in District 6950”, announced District Governor Russ Miller as he made his annual visit to the five existing Rotary Clubs in Citrus County. He said, “I am very excited about the interest in developing a new club in Sugarmill Woods - a community of more than 9,000 with a number of new businesses.” Miller continued by saying, With new clubs and membership growth, Rotary will be able to extend its efforts to “do good in the world.”

Governor Russ went on to say that the time is ripe and the interest is enthusiastic for club extension in several areas of District 6950. The population of Citrus County has grown to 130,000 plus and this will be the first new club in Citrus in more than 20 years.

Charter membership will be available to the first 25 member/applicants, as District 6950 applies for a charter for the Rotary Club of Sugarmill Woods. Sugarmill Woods resident, Rotarian Shelby Weingarten, the outgoing president of the Rotary Club of Crystal River – Kings Bay, spoke to Governor Russ of her dreams of developing a club in her community. As a 16-year resident, she proudly pointed to her neighbors as “doers,” people who see a need and go out of their way to make good things happen. “I am always amazed at the variety of projects and the commitment of my neighbors. Reading these activities in the Greenbelt Gazette, the Homosassa Beacon and the Citrus County Chronicles provides me a joyful start to any day.” “I felt that this was an ideal community for a Rotary club,” stated Weingarten. “My neighbors know how to work together and get things done. I would like to welcome them into Rotary, an organization whose object is to do good in the world.

The Rotary Club of Sugarmill Woods is the newest Rotary Club in Citrus County and in Rotary District 6950. The club's primary focus is literacy and they proudly support the Lecanto Primary School which includes working with disadvantaged youth at the school. It is a growing organization and they are looking for good people who are willing to support their club and their projects to benefit the greater community.

Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

Rotary club membership represents a cross-section of the community's business and professional men and women. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The main objective of Rotary is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is a not-for-profit corporation that promotes world understanding through international humanitarian service programs and educational and cultural exchanges. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and others who share its vision of a better world.
